What is an affiliate program?
An affiliate program pays you a commission when someone you send to a company becomes a paying customer. The company gets a customer it would not otherwise have found; you get a share of the sale for making the introduction.
There are two broad styles. Link-based affiliate programs give you a tracked link to share on a blog, YouTube channel or social media, and credit you when a visitor buys within a set window. Referral programs credit you for introducing a specific person or business, usually through a form or a referral code. Both are free to join when they are genuine, and both pay only when a sale happens.
Types of affiliate programs in India
Most programs open to Indians fall into five groups. They differ less in how you join and more in how much each sale is worth and who you need to reach.
| Type | Examples | How you earn | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ecommerce marketplaces | Amazon Associates | Roughly 1–10% of each order, set by category; electronics pay the least | Bloggers, YouTubers and deal pages with large traffic |
| Affiliate networks and deal apps | Cuelinks, vCommission, EarnKaro | One account gives access to many brands; each brand sets its own rate | Beginners testing which niche works |
| Web hosting and website tools | Hostinger and other hosting companies | A share of the customer’s first purchase, usually on yearly plans | Tech bloggers, web designers, tutorial creators |
| Software (SaaS) | Zoho | Zoho pays 15% on qualified sales for the first 12 months | Consultants, accountants, IT trainers |
| B2B service referral programs | Agencies and software companies, including Zeekoi | A percentage of a project or contract often worth lakhs | Anyone who knows business owners |
Why high-value referrals often pay more
A high percentage on a cheap product can earn less than a modest percentage on an expensive one. Compare what a single successful referral is worth:
| What you refer | Sale value | Rate | You earn |
|---|---|---|---|
| A smartphone through a marketplace link | ₹25,000 | 2% | ₹500 |
| A yearly software subscription | ₹30,000 | 15% | ₹4,500 |
| A business website project | ₹2,00,000 | 12.5% | ₹25,000 |
The trade-off is volume and speed. A popular product link can convert hundreds of times a month if you have the audience. A business deal converts far less often and takes longer, because companies compare quotes and plan budgets before they sign. If you already know business owners, though, a handful of introductions a year can be worth more than months of link sharing. See what a website costs in India for a sense of typical project values.
How to choose an affiliate program: 8 things to check
- What the percentage applies to. The first order only, the full contract, or the first year of a subscription? The same percentage can mean very different money.
- One-time or recurring. Recurring programs keep paying while the customer stays, usually for a fixed period such as 12 months.
- How referrals are tracked. Link programs use a cookie window; Zoho’s, for example, is 90 days. For referral programs, ask how an introduction is registered so you are credited if the deal closes weeks later.
- Payout threshold and method. Check the minimum balance before a payout, how often payouts run, and whether money arrives by bank transfer, UPI or PayPal.
- When a sale counts. Many programs pay only after the customer has paid and any refund or return window has passed.
- Who does the selling. In some programs you are expected to pitch and close. In others you make the introduction and the company’s team handles the demo and the deal.
- Fit with your audience or network. Promote what the people you reach actually need. A program you can recommend honestly converts better and keeps your reputation intact.
- Cost to join. Genuine affiliate programs are free. Paying to join is the first warning sign below.
Red flags to avoid
- A joining fee, “starter kit” or paid training required before you can earn.
- Earnings from recruiting other affiliates rather than from real sales to customers. That is a pyramid structure, not an affiliate program.
- Guaranteed monthly income. Commission depends on sales; nobody can promise a fixed amount.
- No written terms covering commission rates, tracking and payouts.
- A product you would not buy yourself, or a company you cannot verify, with no registered address or track record.
Tax on affiliate income in India
Affiliate commission is taxable income and must be reported in your income tax return. Regular affiliates usually report it as business or professional income; an occasional referral may be treated differently, so ask a tax adviser which applies to you.
Indian companies paying commission usually deduct TDS. For FY 2025-26 the rate under Section 194H was 2% once the commission from one payer crossed ₹20,000 in the year, and 20% if you had not given your PAN. The Income-tax Act, 2025, in force from April 2026, renumbers these sections, so check the rate for the year you are paid. TDS deducted is credited against your tax when you file your return. Once your total income from services crosses the GST registration threshold (₹20 lakh a year in most states), you also need to register for GST.
Can students earn from affiliate programs?
Yes. Affiliate programs need no investment, and you can do them part time around classes. Be realistic about the route you choose. Link-based programs depend on traffic, and building a blog or channel that sells usually takes months. Referral programs can pay from your first introduction if you know businesses that need what the program offers, such as a family business, a local shop that wants a website, or an institution planning an app. Check the program’s age rules and that you can be paid into a bank account in your own name.
